HOW TO BECOME A FREELANCE WRITER | It's pretty easy, even if you are unqualified
So you want to know how to become a freelance writer? That's great, because it offers a good lifestyle when you finally start getting enough work to pay the bills.
For me, it happened pretty quickly. That's because I was referred by my employer to a client who stuck with me for 9 years. She provided my base salary and allowed me to work from 15 different countries in hotel rooms, internet cafes, and even on the beach. Of course, I never stopped working because I was writing and editing for a monthly publication and the articles constantly had to be edited and/or written.
In the long run, however, I expanded my client base to include people who I found online. They didn't pay as well as my long-term client and they didn't have to. I was one of thousands of writers they could choose from. Some of them stuck with me for a year or more and some of them I dumped because they just wouldn't pay me what I was worth.
I guess what I'm saying is that referral clients are your best bet to ensure decent pay for the work you'll do.
Another point to consider in how to become a freelance writer is where you are seeking clients. If it's an English speaking country, your best bet is to specialize in one category and do it well. Then ask for referrals and testimonials from your clients. This allows you to populate a simple website or blog with some flattering info about you that can help people decide to hire you.
If you live in a non-English speaking country, you will want to be a generalist, willing to work in any genre and write about any subject. This gives you more leverage in those markets.
One of the main things to consider is why you want to be a freelance writer. Do you love the work? Do you crave the freedom of working in your underwear in bed? Do you want to travel more and don't mind doing a little work while you're on the go? All of these are valid reasons.
If you're doing it for the money, you may want to supplement your income until you gain a solid reputation and strong client base. For that, I suggest doing what I did: start your own home-based business and learn a new set of skills in the process.
